I live in Zatorze where Chorzowska street runs behind my house like an epic modern art installation created by Jack the Ripper and Idi Amin. Coming of age? I have three daughters and each day they get older while I get poorer and balder. None of this mattered. The first few minutes of “I Never Cry” had me hooked, a scene where17 year old Ola (Zofia Stafiej) is on her third driving test and it captured perfectly that ephemeral moment when asshole driving combines with hair-trigger emotions and combusts into infantile aggression. I don’t actively seek out social realism, but it’s hard not to be pulled in by the relatable aspects of films from the Dardenne brothers or Ken Loach.
