This is not a movie review. This is a public health warning; avoid the movie Barbie at all costs. It is brain-cancer in celluloid form. How could it be any other way?

Barbie, the doll that is, was born from duplicity when Ruth Handler, one the founders of the Mattel toy empire came across the German doll Bild Lilli. Handler channelled the American spirit of Manifest Destiny and stole the entire concept.
The fraudulent nature adopted by the Barbie movie is more high-end, more insidious, eschewing inclusivity for division, reinforcing all the nasty tropes from the culture wars for the exact same reason Facebook promotes right-wing conflict and hate; ching-ching, which also happens to be the sound of this movie heading towards ticket sales of nearly 1 billion dollars. This is a wolf in day-glow pink sheep’s clothing, a triumph of marketing, fooling many into believing they bought tickets for a light-hearted comedy punctuated with occasional meta-references.
