Former Arizona Attorney General (AG) Mark Brnovich said the indictment of former President Donald Trump is a clear example of an effort to weaponize government bureaucracy.
During an episode of the “Sara Carter Podcast,” Brnovich expounded that Trump’s indictment weaponized America’s justice system – with the effort reaching the tipping point for political prosecutions. Whoever was in power could intimidate and arrest their political opponents, he added.
“America is where guilt or innocence is not determined by the evidence, but by whether the people in power consider you a friend or an enemy. That’s what has happened in the last few years,” said Brnovich.
“That’s one of the reasons why in the last few years, even the last few decades, we’ve seen this really ramped up, where if you disagree with some on the Left, it’s not just enough for them to win the argument or win an election, they want to cancel and destroy you. You see it in a cancel culture where you have this theory that if you don’t agree with the dominant, far-Left progressive agenda, you will lose your job, lose money or your livelihood.”
According to the erstwhile AG for the Grand Canyon State, some Americans believe so strongly in the institutions and the rule of law that they are denying the existence of political prosecution.
“If there is not a reasonable likelihood of conviction, you are not supposed to bring [Trump’s] case. And I just think objectively, it is a dangerous precedent when we start going after major candidates and literally the former president,” Brnovich told Carter. “The reality is when you’re a prosecutor, you can take away people’s livelihood, their life, liberty and property. So, it’s an awesome responsibility. I told young prosecutors, agents and officers: You don’t throw stuff against the wall and see what sticks. Ethically, as the prosecutor, you’re only supposed to bring charges when you have a reasonable likelihood of conviction.”
Carter: Americans should be able to say Lady Justice is blind
Given that the federal government has been deeply weaponized and politicized, Brnovich has been advocating decentralization of power and limited federal government.
The former Arizona AG was not alone in this sentiment, however. Even Trump himself called for the temporary defunding of the Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
“Republicans in Congress should defund the DOJ and the FBI until they come to their senses,” the former president wrote in an April 5 post on his Truth Social account. “The Democrats have totally weaponized law enforcement in our country, and are viciously using this abuse of power to interfere with our already under siege elections.”
Carter also stressed that Americans should be able to say that Lady Justice is blind and that they live in a nation where they can be represented, regardless of where they stand in the political spectrum.
“We should be able to trust that our bureaucracy is being run ethically, and that we are not some kind of backward banana republic. Because the rest of the world is watching us and we are a beacon of light,” the podcast host said. “But America’s fracturing: People don’t trust our DOJ anymore for crying out loud.”
