Peadar de Burca: 100 Days of War

Russia is a rogue nation, or to quote that great Rolling Stones anthem, “Gimme Shelter”, it is a mad bull who has lost its way.

After three months of full-scale war against our Ukrainian neighbours in which ground troops invaded from several directions and missiles hit targets across the country, right up to the border with Poland, the epicentre of the conflict has returned to the region where Russia has been fighting Ukraine for the past eight years: Donbas. This is Putin’s comfort zone, his safe place where his troops are closer to their supply lines. The battles here are winnable and from such a position of strength, the despot has options. He can either declare victory and proclaim the war over, or he can slowly and slyly inch westwards until we wake up five years from now and find Kyiv buried under a red coal carpet and the mad bull hammering on Poland’s door.
