W klasyfikacji generalnej pozostał na prowadzeniu Meksykanin Isaac Del Toro (UAE Team Emirates).
Trasa trzeciego etapu (136 km) była płaska, za wyjątkiem Gemmell Hill (88 km; 4,1 km; 3,9%).
W akcji dnia tym razem znaleźli się Vinicius Rangel (Movistar Team) i Jackson Medway (Australia), uzyskując około 4 minut przewagi.
Dwójka pozostała z przodu na Gemmell Hill, zostając dościgniętą 12 kilometrów przed finiszem. W emocjonującym finale ponowie najlepiej odnalazł się 28-letni Welsford, odnosząc swoje trzecie etapowe zwycięstwo w tegorocznym wyścigu.
Brak mi słów. Tak jak w poprzednich dniach spoczywało na nas trochę presji, ale jechaliśmy bardzo dobrze. Finisz był na szybkim podjeździe i nie wiem dokładnie, jak to wszystko się stało, ale miałem dobre tempo na wyjściu z zakrętu. To zwycięstwo jest po prostu niesamowite, mamy idealny początek roku. Wyjątkowe jest również to, że trafiłem do nowego zespołu i od razu otrzymałem takie wsparcie
– emocjonował się Welsford, który karierę zawodową rozpoczął dopiero przed dwoma laty w Team DSM.
W sobotę kolarze zakończą etap na Willunga Hill (3,4 km; 7,3%).
